The Land of Smiles is known for its warm and inviting culture, serenity and calmness oozes from the Thai people and that infectious smile beckons. Like any country, Thailand has her customs and traditions and if you are planning your first trip to this paradise land, here are a few mistakes to avoid.
- Display anger – As far as the Thais are concerned, there is no excuse for an outburst of anger or frustration; the Sabai, Sabai attitude rubs off on you and you’ll find life much easier when you chill out. The humid sticky climate; add to that the language barrier and it is easy to get a bit emotional, try to avoid doing this, it isn’t cool. Relax and don’t sweat the small stuff and smile, it will take away that bad feeling. Many digital nomads stay year-round, with affordable condos for rent in Bangkok Thailand, you can travel the country and always have a base in the capital.
- Pointing your feet – When on the beach or in a swimming pool area, be aware of your feet and do not point them anywhere near a Thai. The feet are regarded as the dirtiest part of the body; touching someone with your foot would not be a wase thing to do! Take off your shoes if you see lots of shoes at a doorway, especially in temple grounds; if you wear regular flip-flops, you might have a problem finding yours among the many pairs.
- Never say anything negative about the Thai Royal Family – This is a non-no; there are severe sentences handed out for Les Majeste, never ever put your foot on a Thai banknote (the King’s picture is on every note), if a note does fall from your hand, pick it up and all is fine. The Thai people revere their monarchy, an institution that does many good things for the population; every Thai home has a picture of their King and that is not compulsory; it is one of many traditions; the Thai National Anthem is played at 8am and 6pm daily and should you hear it, best to sop for the short duration, as a show of respect.
- Don’t vape in public – Vaping gear is illegal in Thailand and technically, if you are in possession of a vape pen, you could be arrested and charged. This is because there is no tax category for vaping stuff and we’re sure that will soon be amended; yes, you will see vape gear being sold on the streets in touristy areas, which is rather weird, we advise you to leave your vape equipment at home, just to be on the safe side. Here are a few money-saving travel hacks that everyone should know.
- Walking in the grass – Thailand is home to many species of snake, and some are highly venomous. We don’t recommend walking through grass wearing flip-flops, you could easily step on a cobra and even the small one can kill! Trekking is an amazing experience and before you off the track, stomp your feet hard on the ground a few times and the vibration will alert any snakes and you won’t have an encounter.
If this is your very first visit to Thailand, we are sure that it won’t be your last!
